Primary vs Secondary Coverage #
Primary coverage is billed first under the verified coordination-of-benefits order. Secondary coverage may receive the claim after the primary payer has processed it.
What to do #
- Open the patient’s selected case.
- Review the Primary and Secondary insurance sections.
- Confirm the policy information and subscriber for each.
- Compare the sequence with verified coverage information.
- Correct the order if your source shows it is wrong.
Verify before you finish #
- Primary and secondary were not reversed.
- Member IDs remain attached to the correct payer.
- The intended case is selected.
Important
Do not infer primary status from which card the patient presents first. Verify the coverage order.
